Branching out...trying new things :)

This week we received a package from the Smarties, our lunch exchange class in Western Australia. Inside we found two packages of Caramello Koalas, a jar of Vegemite, a book about Australian food, lots of stickers, an Australian flag, and a card for each of us! We thought the chocolate was DELICIOUS, we really enjoyed the story, thought it was cool getting a personalized card, and decorated our desks and folders with the stickers. As far as the Vegemite, we were really thankful to get to try it. :) It was like nothing we'd ever tasted before and we weren't really sure what to think. A few of us said we'd eat it again, but most decided we'd rather stick to the chocolates. We ALL agreed that this was an awesome end to a fun project!

Third Grade Authors

We have had some cool things going on in our classroom lately and would love to tell you about them.

Thursday- JDRF Walk by Jillian and Natalie
Natalie and Jillian walked around the school Thursday morning after we earned money to help find a cure for diabetes. To earn money we would go door to door asking for $1 or more to help diabetes. A lot of other kids in the school did it too.

Thursday- Entrepreneur Fair by Maddie, Hunter, Charlie and Macey
We have an Entrepreneur Fair every year. We have a lot of candy that the 5th graders sell. They also have games that the 5th graders sell too. Plus they even have prizes that you can win or vote on. Some of the stuff for sale are flip flops, tattoos, balloon hats, pretzels dipped in chocolate and a lot more.

Math Tiles- by Chase, Mason, Sam
Math tiles are little laminated tiles with numbers on them. They also have sheets with problems that you put the tiles on. There are 20 sheets in a set. There are 21 types on problems. Some are hard- the longer you go, the harder they get. Math tiles are really fun. Math tiles also make you get a lot smarter and get good math grades.

My Hippo Has the Hiccups - by Brevan, Trevor, Seth and Matthew
Poetry was very fun today. Our class watched a lot of poetry from a book called My Hippo Has the Hiccups. It was fun listening to the poetry and we also listened to My Nostrils Smell Awesome. And it was very funny.

We got mail! by McKenna, Heather, Abby and Emily
Today, March 23rd, we got a package from Australia! We were so excited when we found out that we finally got the package from Australia. We got Vegemite, chocolate, stickers, cards, and a flag. Our class is super excited to eat our treats! We will post pictures soon.

Smarties' Blog- by Haley, Alainey and Audrey
When we saw the Smarties blog we were excited to learn about their country. It was really exciting when we got to hear their voices talking about the goldfish that we had sent them! It was fun because we got to see how the Smarties dress and look.

Happy SUNNY Friday!

What a fun, busy day! This morning, we had a visitor from 4-H. Mr. Andrew was here to talk to us about soil and all the things that it is used for. He said if we didn't have soil, we wouldn't even be here! It must be pretty important! He had some examples for us to pass around and touch. He said that our next lesson will be at the end of April, and it will be about entomology. He promised that we would like it! Leave a comment on our blog if you find out what entomology is!

We talked about what we had learned through our lunch exchange with Western Australia, and made a list of similarities and differences that we found out. On Monday, we'll be putting this on the "what we have learned" page as well as making some voice recordings for them to listen to. Earlier in the week, we packaged up some Goldfish crackers and a book to send to our friends overseas. We hope they like it!

After math tiles and lunch, we had a "in school field trip" from the Explorium. The title of the lesson was "Water, Water EVERYWHERE" where we learned that the water that we have on Earth has been around forever! We got to make a cloud in a glass jar, which we loved.
We also got to spend some time outside in the beautiful sunshine!!!!
KING OF THE CLASSROOM for the week- Sam! Sam is a fun, outgoing, smart kid and our classroom certainly wouldn't be the same without him. He always participates in class discussions and is a good friend to others. Thanks for being a great kid, Sam!
